Hanging Rock Summit

Hanging Rock is spot on if you’re looking for a pretty easy day hike that wouldn’t rush you if the plans are to visit and return to from Melbourne in the same day…/afternoon.

Be sure to know that there is an entry fee and reserve isn’t accessible all day. Hanging Rock reserve is open every day except Christmas from 9:00am-5:00pm. By car it’s $10 and there is plenty of parking – to cut costs: if there are only two of you and you’re walking in, it’s $4 each or if there are 6+, then a minibus is $20.

It’s a relatively easy walk to a really beautiful and interesting summit – it’ll take you around 30 minutes to reach the top, although you might want to stop a few times to checkout different rock formations with amazing horizon views of country Victoria hidden behind many of them. Most of the walk is asphalt and it steep at parts, the track then turns to dirt shortly before reaching some steps that pop out at a natural maze of rocks at the top.

Allow plenty of time to slowly explore the rocks at the top and take in the view – we were up there for a good 45 minutes before spending an hour slowly adventuring back down to the information centre and car park.
